There are many services available to the deaf in Nashville. The people of Nashville feel that just because you have a hearing impairment doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to enjoy our great city. We will go over services, outreach and counselling and give you information on how to cope with having a hearing impairment in Nashville.

Nashville has a wide range of services for the deaf and hearing impaired. Theatre, Library, and Church services just to name a few. You can just about be free of worry knowing that you are in a city that understands your needs.

Nashville understands that even in a city that is centered around Country Music that under the bright lights of our beautiful city there is a community of bright, intelligent and hard working citizens who strive to leave to the best of their ability despite the fact that they are deaf or hearing impaired.

Bridges assist the deaf and hard of hearing residents of the Nashville area achieve all that they can despite any hearing impairments they may have. They believe that an individual with hearing impairments can reach their full potential through education, services and support. Bridges empowers Nashville's deaf and hard of hearing to live their life to it's fullest.

They were established as a way to fulfill a need in Nashville. In the 1920's a woman by the name of Margaret Lane Washington discovered that she was going deaf. So, Mrs. Washington moved to Washington, D.C. There she studied lip reading and became certified as a lip reading teacher.

After completing her education she moved back to Tennessee where she taught her first lip reading class in Murfreesboro. That small class of only 13 became the catalyst for what we now know as Bridges. Mrs. Washington passed away in 1991 but not before helping many Nashville residents live happier more complete lives. She left a legacy that continues to bring smiles to the faces of Nashville's deaf and hard of hearing even today.

Library Services for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing has been committed to helping those who are deaf, hearing impaired, and are deaf-blind receive media to better educate those with these impairments on the world around them.

Established in 1978 with it's first program being a TTY News service program the library has continued efforts to improve your general self education needs. The program made it possible for the hearing impaired to access international, national, state and local news.

The library receives funds from the Tennessee Department of State.

Gate Communications just south of Nashville is a deaf community outreach program that works with residents in and around Nashville. They not only operate in Nashville but have worked with communities in 5 different countries. They offer interpreting, community events and education to assist in a better life for our deaf community.

They host and help those who would like to host workshops for the residents of Nashville. Workshops include education on but are not limited to.

Brentwood Baptist Deaf Church provides church and fellowship for the deaf. It's a place where the deaf community of Nashville can come together for worship with family and friends. They assist with transportation needs for the deaf to and from church service.

The Brentwood Baptist Deaf Church offers a place for Nashville's deaf residents to attend services and an understanding of the word in a language that is easily understood by our deaf citizens. They provide conferences and counseling for their attendees.
